I began painting seven years ago, drawn to the expressive possibilities of oil paint and oil sticks. I like to work on Belgian flax linen canvas or board, as I enjoy the texture it brings to the surface and the way it becomes part of the finished work. My Latvian heritage has a strong influence on my practice, and I am particularly drawn to the rich cultures, landscapes and visual traditions of Eastern and Northern Europe. I have exhibited my work in various venues across Bristol. Through my work, I explore atmosphere, character and a sense of place, combining cultural influences with a contemporary, tactile approach to painting.
